Welcome to the latest episode of our weekly roundup of news from the TV and film industry.

This week we are featuring the new third-party licences for the ARRI Hi-5, RED's announcement of Super 35 versions of their V-Raptor and V-Raptor XL cameras plus DaVinci Resolve's latest 18.1.4 update.

ARRI Hi-5 third party licenses

ARRI has released new third party licenses for their flagship remote camera and lens control hand unit - the ARRI Hi-5. The two new control license keys allow for remote camera control from the Hi-5 for various RED and Sony cameras, including the VENICE and VENICE 2 as well as the RED DSMC 2 line-up in addition to the latest generation RED Komodo, V-Raptor, and V-Raptor XL. Out of the box, the ARRI Hi-5 supports Run/Stop for just about every cinema camera on the market without a license, however a dedicated camera control license opens up a lot more camera control options. Such options include the ability to remotely change the Frame Rate, ND Filter, White Balance, Shutter Speed, as well as access Playback in addition to others. In addition, on the VENICE and VENICE 2 users also have the ability to inject lens metadata, which can be very helpful with post.

Red Super 35 V-Raptors

RED has announced Super 35 sensor versions of their V-Raptor and V-Raptor XL cameras. The cameras retain the same body design, IO and features as their large format counterparts, but are now equipped with 8K Super 35 sensors capable of achieving the same sensor scan as the 8K Vista Vision sensor. According to RED the new Super 35 V-Raptor and V-Raptor XL cameras are rated at 16.5 stops dynamic range and are capable of incredible speeds in high resolutions such as 8K at 120fps and 4K and up to 240 fps. These super-fast frame rates make the Super 35 V-Raptor cameras extremely popular for commercial and wildlife filming as they also offer various RAW compressions in addition to Apple ProRes flavours. The XL Raptor comes equipped with an interchangeable PL mount and integrated electronic ND filters, while the V-Raptor has a native Canon RF mount, which is easily adaptable to other mounts.

Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 18.1.4

Blackmagic Design has released a new update for DaVinci Resolve. The latest Resolve 18.1.4 update brings faster load performance for timelines with a large number of markers and also the ability to sync bin views using creation date instead of modified date. This update also provides support for monochrome decode of ARRIRAW clips as well as the ability to cancel the 'grab all' stills process. The latest update also fixes some bugs and issues relating to the Dehaze Effect in DaVinci Wide Gamut, missing audio when scrubbing the sync bin, and other general performance and stability improvements.
