Welcome to the latest episode of our weekly roundup of news from the TV and film industry.

This week we are featuring the 2021 Oscar nominations and the production kit that was used behind the scenes, Sony's CineAlta Club, offering support and training to those looking to get more familiar with their VENICE camera and ARRI's extensive range of Remote Solutions for Production as showcased in their online webinar.

2021 Oscar nominations

Just this past week, the Academy announced the 2021 Oscar nominations including the five films nominated in the Best Cinematography category. And not surprisingly, the majority of DoPs chose ARRI cameras with the ALEXA MINI LF used on three nominated films including The Trail of the Chicago 7, Judas and the Black Messiah and News of the World, lensed by Darius Wolski. DP Joshua Richards chose the Alexa MINI and AMIRA for Nomadland, while the notable exception to the ARRI rule was David Fincher's Mank, shot by cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt on a custom-made RED Ranger Helium Monochrome to create the unique look of Classic Era Hollywood.

Sony CineAlta Club

Sony's CineAlta Club is offering support and training to those looking to get more familiar with their VENICE camera. This is an excellent opportunity for DoPs and crews using the VENICE for the first time to get hands-on support as well as those looking for a refresher on the latest updates and cinematography workflows for the Sony VENICE. Most sessions are held online, and whenever possible in-person at Sony's facility in Pinewood Studios. In addition, Sony is also offering a VENICE Accreditations, which is earned after a two-day paid training course for DITs, Camera Assistants, and DoPs, looking to get a more in-depth knowledge on best practices and real-world VENICE workflows. Check out the link below for more details on the next available dates for these sessions and courses.

ARRI Remote Solutions

ARRI recently showed off their extensive range of Remote Solutions for Production in an online webinar, which featured some excellent case study examples of ARRI tools used in near-set and off-set production workflows. ARRI's Remote Solutions ecosystem offers a comprehensive set of tools for maintaining safety and compliance with COVID social distancing protocols on set. These are not just limited to remote camera and lens control for ALEXA Mini LF, AMIRA and other ALEXA cameras, but also include remote camera movement tools such as the SRH-3 remote head, wireless lighting control and others giving gaffers, DOPs and directors more creative control from a remote location.
