Welcome to the latest episode of our weekly roundup of news from the TV and film industry.

This week we are featuring the latest Alexa 35 SUP 1.1 update from ARRI, the new Sony VENICE 2 and Rialto 2 demo footage, and the newly released Gemini 1x1 and 2x1 firmware update E1 from Litepanels.

ARRI ALEXA 35 SUP 1.1

ARRI has just released the first major software update for the Alexa 35. Many of the new features in SUP 1.1 are a result of direct customer feedback such as the new 3.8K ARRIRAW UHD recording format, which uses an exact sensor crop to match the 4K UHD deliverable with a maximum frame rate of 120fps when using the 2TB Compact Drive, or 65 fps with the 1TB version. Another new feature in SUP 1.1 is the addition of a playback menu on the side screen, which is very handy when using the camera without a viewfinder or for a quick review of the last take. This update also adds an SDI Clone Mode, a new Wireless Video Optimised LogC4 intermedia encoding for on-set colour grading as well as four new user buttons such as VF Check HDR, VF Processing, FPS Preset, and Audio Solo.

Sony Rialto 2 Demo Footage

Sony has released a short film and a companion behind the scenes feature demonstrating various aspects of the VENICE 2 such as the latest high frame rates introduced with firmware 2.0 and the versatility of the Rialto 2 extension system. Shot by cinematographer Matt Roe and camera operator Ryan Wood, “Tonight We Ride” shows off the impressive versatility of the VENICE 2 when paired with the Rialto 2, which allows the user to separate the sensor block from the camera body and therefore make it possible to place the camera in very tight spaces and/or provide a more dynamic handheld style of filming for a more immersive viewing experience. The film was also shot on vintage lenses and features extensive night exteriors, which further demonstrated the VENICE’s incredible sensitivity and colour reproduction.

Litepanels Gemini Firmware Update

Litepanels has released a new firmware update for the Gemini 1x1 and 2x1 LED panels. Firmware update E1 adds a new menu structure for a more simplified and intuitive navigation including colour modes and DMX settings. Also new in firmware E1 is the addition of XY coordinates and CCT + HIS colour blend in manual mode without the need for a DMX console, which allows for more precise dialling of the desired colour. The new Lock-out mode prevents accidental change of settings by locking down the control buttons, while the Blackout button upgrade provides a quick and easy way to shut off the light temporarily by holding down the dimming button for 2 seconds.
