Sony RM-DP5 5" Cinema Line Monitor Controller

A bright touchscreen monitor and a hands-on lens controller in one compact unit

The Sony RM-DP5 does two jobs for Cinema Line shooters. It is a daylight-readable on-camera monitor, and it is also a control surface for the camera and lens. A tactile control knob and a side handgrip are included, so you can adjust settings and pull focus without leaving the monitor. It sits on the camera, or you can hold it and work remotely.

A Screen You Can Read in Direct Sun

The 5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) touch LCD reaches up to 2,000 cd/m². That is double the 1,000-nit panels common on monitors this size, and it keeps your footage legible in strong outdoor light. Sony calibrates each unit individually at the factory, using technology from its professional video monitors. The monitor also compensates for colour temperature drift as it runs, so the picture stays reliable through a long day.

If you shoot S-Log3, you can load LUTs and preview your intended look on set. The monitor holds six built-in presets, and you can import up to 16 of your own.

Pull Focus from the Monitor

The included control knob attaches to the side of the monitor and gives you precise manual control over focus on compatible Cinema Line cameras. It works over a wired or wireless connection, with no gear-driven follow-focus rig needed. It draws power from the monitor, so there is no separate battery to manage. The ergonomic shape, smooth torque and fine resolution suit careful focus pulls, including from a distance.

The Lens Control page supports your focus work:

• Focus indicator: A bar at the edge of the screen follows the knob, so it stays out of the way of your image. You can set mechanical stops and mark focus points.
• Autofocus: Use touch focus or touch tracking with compatible FX cameras, and switch between manual and auto as the shot demands.
• Zoom: With a compatible lens attached, zoom by button or touch and adjust the zoom speed.

Controls That Match How You Work

The physical controls sit around the screen. The HOME button takes you to the BIG6 screen, which gathers frame rate, ISO, shutter, ND or iris, Look and white balance. Tap any of them to check or change it. Six ITEM keys above and below the display jump straight to Main, Scopes, Lens Control, Clips, Display and User pages. A REC button syncs with the camera, and there are two assignable buttons, a multi-function dial and a lock switch. A time counter and audio level meter share the screen with these controls.

When the DP5 is connected to a compatible camera, shooting information and icons appear outside the image area, so they don’t cover your frame.

Exposure, Focus and Framing Tools

Double-tap the screen to magnify up to 6x, pinch to adjust and swipe to move around the image. The Scopes page offers:

Aspect markers, de-squeeze and peaking cover framing and focus checks. If you don’t need camera control, the DP5 also works as a standalone on-camera monitor through its HDMI input, and you can rotate the screen orientation from the menu.

Wired or Wireless

For a wired setup, use the Ethernet port or the USB-C connection. For wireless, connect a third-party video transmitter to the HDMI input. That gives you wireless lens control and video transmission up to 4K.

Power and Build

Power the DP5 with a Sony BP-U series battery on the rear plate. The hot-swap function lets you change batteries without interrupting the shoot. You can also power it over USB-C from a compatible external source.

The body is lightweight aluminium designed to resist dust and moisture. A built-in cooling fan with selectable modes manages heat, so you can choose stable operation or lower fan noise. Four 1/4"-20 threads give you mounting options. Four corner strap holes and the side handgrip let you carry it or work one-handed.
