The Sony SRG-A40 is a 4K PTZ camera with built-in AI analytics. It spots a person on camera, follows their movement and keeps the shot well composed, so a lecture, service, meeting or event can be filmed without anyone behind the camera. A powerful zoom, a wide angle of view and professional connections make it suitable for education, corporate, worship, broadcast and live-event setups.

Auto Framing That Looks Like Camera Work

The camera’s AI detects a person’s skeleton and head position, then adjusts pan, tilt and zoom to keep them framed comfortably, whatever their posture, movement or clothing. It can follow the right person even with several people in the shot.

You get plenty of control over the look:

• Multi-person Framing: Track a group of up to eight people, with a primary subject and secondary subjects chosen by proximity. This suits panels, conferences and ceremonies.
• Face Registration: Register your presenter so the camera prioritises them. With firmware 4.0 you can import face data as JPEG files ahead of time, and the camera uses it to find the subject quickly after tracking is lost.
• Lead Room Effect: Leave space in the direction the subject is looking, with three margin levels.
• Thirty composition sizes: Choose from full body to Closer Closeup, with fine left, right, up and down adjustments. You can change the composition in the web app even while Auto Framing is running.

Firmware 4.0 Additions

Sony’s version 4.0 update adds more control:

• Tracking Range: Limit tracking to a set area and ignore people outside it.
• Fixed Angle Position: Hold a steady view when someone enters a chosen zone, such as a lectern, then resume tracking when they leave.
• Ball Sports (Basketball) Mode: Track the ball and the players together for an overview of indoor five-on-five games. It needs a centre-court sideline position and an official ball, and can’t run alongside Person Framing.
• Save and recall Auto Framing settings, with live overlays of the tracking area on the web interface.

Zoom and Picture

The A40’s lens has a 20x optical range. Clear Image Zoom extends it to 30x in 4K and 40x in Full HD, so you can reach a speaker at the back of a hall or capture a wide shot of the audience from the same position. The wide angle of view of about 70° covers a large part of the room. High-speed pan and tilt keep up with a moving presenter, and PTZ Motion Sync gives smooth transitions when the camera travels between presets.

Auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance deliver professional results without manual adjustment. Other useful tools:

• Up to 256 preset positions for instant recall
• Picture Freeze Preset to output high-quality still images while streaming 4K video
• Picture Setting File to copy image settings across several cameras for matching looks

• IP streaming: Stream 4K 30p over popular IP protocols
• HDMI and SDI outputs: Feed switchers and recorders at the same time as streaming
• NDI|HX capability: Join NDI networks with an optional licence
• Single network cable: PoE++ carries power, video, audio and control

Control and Installation

The supplied IR remote commander handles wireless pan, tilt and zoom, and also turns Auto Framing on and off and toggles between single and Multi-person Framing, a help to solo operators. For hands-on control, add Sony’s optional RM-IP500 remote controller, and use the web app from a networked PC for composition and settings.

A built-in tally lamp shows red for On Air and green when PTZ Auto Framing is active. The compact, lightweight body comes with a ceiling mounting plate and is available in white or black.
