Sony PMW-F3L (PMW-F3, PMWF3L, PMWF3, F3) Super 35mm Camcorder (BODY ONLY)

It's all about the sensor
The PMW-F3L is Sony's affordable digital cinematography camcorder which features a Super 35mm sized Exmor™ CMOS image sensor that precisely matches that of 35mm film, hence the PMW-F3 natively delivers a 'filmic' DoF (depth of field). This sensor is not a reworked DSLR sensor: It is a Full HD resolution sensor that has been manufactured specifically for HD video acquisition. This means that its individual pixels are far larger than with camcorders that utilise high resolution DSLR sensors and large pixels translate into vastly improved sensitivity and reduced video noise levels. In a nutshell, the F3 delivers beautiful images.

Global compatibility & Variable frame rate recording
The F3 is part of Sony's CineAlta (Gold) family of digital cinematography products and as such it supports multiple frame rates including 23.98P / 25P. It can record 1-30fps at full HD 1920x1080 resolution or 1-60fps at 720p.

PMW-F3 Lens mount
The PMW-F3 features a bespoke Sony 'F mount' which has an ultra-short flange-back distance, allowing third party manufacturers to produce a range of adaptors for virtually any lens that can provide Super 35mm sensor coverage.

As standard, the PMW-F3L is supplied with a PL mount lens adaptor for compatibility with industry standard 35mm lenses - The lens mount features dual electrical interfaces for compatibility with Arri LDS PL and Cooke/i PL lenses. (Sony's PL lenses use the Cooke/i interface).

The PMW-F3 has 2 internal SxS card slots for internal 8-bit (4:2:0) Long-GOP recording at up to 35Mb/s, however as standard it also features a 10-bit (4:2:2) uncompressed output via HD-SDI allowing easy connection to external recording devices such as the Convergent Design NanoFlash, AJA KiPro or similar.

From April 2011 a Dual-Link HD-SDI option will enable 4:4:4 RGB uncompressed signal output - ideal for the high-end film production.
