SOLIDAIR - High Definition Feature Film

was conceived as an HD production from the start.

We wanted to retain the flexibility of working digitally with the aesthetic potential of 35mm film.

In addition, we knew we wanted the movie to be finished to Cinemascope, which was not practical on film for a low budget, location shoot. With investment from NESTA the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts the support of Sony, The Farm Group and Digital Film Lab amongst others we trialled a variety of methods through 2000/2 developing the methods that best balanced cost, convenience and aesthetics.

When Director of Photography Neville Kidd came on board he recommended Visual Impact as the place to go for HD equipment and support. They proved to be the final piece in the puzzle.

With their exceptional experience and willingness to experiment, they provided Neville with the assistance he required to optimise the camera by manipulating the menus and generating the settings to suit practicality and the desired final look.

They were also able to best advise on the necessary accessories and support equipment.

Director May Miles Thomas was aiming for a highly stylised, sombre but rich autumnal look.

The intent was to give Solid Air the appearance of a film shot for a far higher budget.

Through the use of High Definition and with the support of Visual Impact I believe we succeeeded triumphantly.

The proof of this is Neville's award of a Silver Dolphin for Best Cinematographer at the FIAPF accredited Festival Internacional de Cinema de Troia 2004, Portugal.
