South African TV: " RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY "

RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY

The Red Bull Music Academy brings together DJ's and music producers from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds to exchange their ideas about music and their knowledge of how life in the music industry works.

The two-week term schedules aim to cover all major aspects of DJ culture, including music history, technology and production, business and skills. We invite a variety of accomplished international guests - from industry movers and shakers to pirate radio station operators, from turn table lists to sonic theorists - to meet our students and tell their own stories in their own words.

BACKGROUND

The first Red Bull Music Academy took place in Berlin in 1998. 50 DJ/producers from Germany and Austria were chosen to attend 2 fortnightly workshops on music history, technology and business. After two years in Berlin, we moved to Dublin, to New York and then to London, increasing the international mix of our students to 28 countries. The purpose of the Academy is to provide a platform for the exchange of musical knowledge and ideas - a familiar atmosphere in which guest lecturers and participants can talk about the experiences and fascinations that make up their musical lives. The participants can also learn a lot from one another, sampling each other's styles and exchanging new ideas and techniques throughout the two weeks they're together.

The Academy doesn't give out any certificates or diplomas, and attending it won't buy anyone a career in the music industry. But it's a valuable experience for everyone; sharing in the successes and failures of the other guests and participants leaving them with a new understanding and approach towards music.

MAGUS VISUALS ROLL IN THE PRODUCTION

Magus Visual supplied the camera and video feed for this musical production. Four cameras were strategically placed in the lecture room to capture the lecturer being interview. The Sony DSR PD 150 and Sony XC-555 or better know as the Pulnix was used. DJ would perform their skills on turntables just be hind the lecture couch.

On this desk mini cameras were placed on either side to capture the DJ's skill at making music with vinyl. The video feed from the four cameras was then vision mixed using Magus's new MX 70 and recorded to hard drive, then edited and uploaded to the web.

The Building next to the lecture hall was a professional recording studio. The studio was patched to the vision mixing room and also recorded. Video feed as well as audio was patched from one building to another. Sony CVX V3 was used and an Sennheiser ME 66 self powered microphone. The DSR PD 150's where also patched in at the adjacent building to provide close-up footage of more technical equipment functions and information. The DSR PD 150's were handheld and the V3 mounted. This production required four day of rigging and 600meters of cabling was used ( mixture of BNC and audio cable) The person doing the vision mixer was in contact with the Magus Camera crew via headsets with built in microphones. Juanne Whyte and Eaton De Jongh from Magus Visual Cape Town were the camera men and Pieter Robison from JUJU Productions was the technical video director for this production.
